Backwards compatibility only stretches back so far, unfortunately, although Microsoft has hinted that Xbox 1 playback could be more than a pipe dream. In any case, at least you can reach back into the slightly more recent past and play a lot of great Xbox 360 games on the current console.

As vibrant and colourful as Rare’s classic SNES titles, Viva Pinata brought family gaming to the Xbox 360 in the form of a life simulator. Part Pokemon part Harvest Moon, Viva Pinata was a critical hit, its gentle, open-ended structure and asynchronous online features creating an enjoyable, relaxing and deceptively deep experience.

Double love for Portal on the same list? Yeah, it truly is that amazing. You can play the brief original either in The Orange Box or the standalone Portal: Still Alive on Xbox One, but don’t overlook the much larger sequel, which also now is backwards compatible. Portal 2 expanded out the puzzle premise into a lengthier campaign starring new characters and featuring numerous new play mechanics, and it’s all just as spectacularly brilliant and hilarious as the first entry. And there’s a separate co-op campaign, too! Download Portal 2 from Xbox Live

cubs223425 November 21, 2013, 5:30 am This is a pretty weak article, in my opinion. The initial question seems to be trolling for attention, because it’s been known for MONTHS that backwards compatibility was not happening. However, it’s not really fair to just blame it on a CPU architecture switch. The original Xbox wasn’t PowerPC, but they did the work to offer software emulation on the 360, allowing for original Xbox games (over 300 of them, if I remember correctly) to play just fine on the 360.I’m hoping that Microsoft offers a GaiKai-like solution long-term, but I’m not expecting it. I’m ultimately fine using the HDMI pass-through, if I keep my 360 after I (eventually) get an Xbox One.

Embedded video We’ve seen a lot of great co-op games over the years, but there’s still nothing quite as satisfying as Valve’s Left 4 Dead games. As in the original, Left 4 Dead 2 puts you in the worn-down shoes of one of four survivors who must work together to outrun and outlast waves and waves of zombies. Teamwork is essential if you’re to survive the intense barrage of undead attackers, and the first-person shooter sequel also offers nearly all of the original game’s content as DLC – so there’s loads to play here. To play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, first make sure your game is supported for Xbox One gameplay. Games supported for backward compatibility are listed in the Xbox 360 catalog. Next, just pop the Xbox 360 disc into your Xbox One console. Or, if you own a game digitally, look for it in your games list under Ready to install. In both cases, the game will download to your console. For disc-based games, the disc is needed to play the game. For instructions on how to download and install games, go to How to install games on Xbox One. We’re looking forward to testing one particular title: CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3. The developer states it supports dynamic resolution scaling, but we’ve yet to see it break the 900p barrier. Given Scorpio’s 4.6x improvement in performance, surely if the tech is in there, we should hit native 1080p – and iron out the performance wobbles at the same time.

“One of the features that we’ve had a lot of requests for — and very vocals requests for — is the ability to run Xbox 360 apps on Xbox One, which is quite difficult to do,” explained Microsoft’s Product Evangelist for Windows 10, Ian Moulster. “It is easy to conceptualise, but actually quite difficult to achieve.”

Embedded video We know, we know: Fallout 4 is out, and if you have an Xbox One and you’re remotely interested in the franchise, chances are you’ve already put 100 hours plus into that world. Fair enough. But if you’re all done, why not loop back to Fallout 3? Bethesda’s first take on the post-apocalyptic franchise delivered an unparalleled open-world experience in the wasteland that once was Washington D.C. – and it’s still captivating now. The company’s plan is to eventually support every game it feasibly can bar a few that cannot be made compatible due to requiring additional accessories to run. These include games like the original Guitar Hero and Rock Band series, plus any that worked with the original Kinect. Even if you have the Xbox One Kinect, it will not be compatible with previous Xbox 360 Kinect games.

The only restrictions to the full Xbox 360 games catalogue being ported over is peripherals. Sadly, you won’t ever be able to play Xbox 360 Kinect games on the Xbox One, because you can’t connect your old Kinect to the new machine. And the new Kinect isn’t compatible with the older titles due to its advanced technology.

Kinect and accessories designed for Xbox 360, and games requiring those accessories, are not compatible with Xbox One consoles. This means racing wheels, fight sticks, and other accessories won’t work with the Xbox 360 game on the Xbox One console.

Embedded video It’s been more than six years since the last great 3D skateboarding game – we know this well because that’s when Skate 3 came out. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 didn’t pass muster, and Skate has kept its wheels grounded, but thankfully Skate 3 is now backwards compatible. EA’s series skews closer to simulation than Hawk’s, making you use analog sticks to emulate real board maneuvers to pull off tricks, and the sense of discovery and accomplishment is absolutely killer. The Mass Effect trilogy is arguably BioWare’s crowning achievement, delivering an original sci-fi role-playing epic with a universe as rich as any we’ve seen and experienced – and you can now enjoy all three entries on Xbox One. Mirror’s Edge Embedded video The Mirror’s Edge reboot may have turned into a bit of a damp squib, but that doesn’t dimish the awesomeness of the original game. Sadly, it looks like you may never play Bayonetta 2 unless you grab a Wii U (yes, really), but at least we’ll always have the absolutely, wonderfully bewildering original – and it’s playable on Xbox One now. Bayonetta is more or less an evolution of the familiar Devil May Cry guns-and-sword formula, only starring a highly-sexualized witch who has guns in her heels and uses her flowing black hair as both her outfit and a weapon. The second aspect is, perhaps, more interesting. Having the same x86 architecture as the PC means that games can be ported much more easily from the Xbox One to PC, and vice-versa. This means less complexity, shorter development times and fewer dodgy ports – the bane of many a gamer. In addition the PS4 also uses a very similar x86 AMD Jaguar processor, which will further help developers when creating cross-platform games.

All of the digital downloads linked to your account will be available straight away, so long as the game is supported by Microsoft. Your achievements, cloud saves and whatnot also carry over.

Embedded video Braid more or less ignited the modern indie game boom, showing that you could make an amazing, meaningful game with a modest budget – but it’s more than just a symbol for that revolution. It’s also a legitimately incredible game, using a Super Mario-like world to deliver brain-bending time-manipulation puzzles while telling a surprisingly heartbreaking story along the way. There’s never been anything quite like it, even today, and it remains essential. Download Braid from Xbox Live RELATED How indie games conquered the world

Not at all, and that would work too. I’m not at all sure there’s a BC issue – as you say, just play 360 games through a 360. It would be a ‘nice to have’ thing that, in all likelihood, I’d never use. But, I suppose that’s not to say that there could be a lot of people out there who would want this feature? Maybe there’s a poll out there.

Do not believe for a second that Microsoft’s move to the XboxOne and decision to not support 360 games is not purely profit driven, as wellas keeping up with Sony. Fan of Microsoft and their products, none of this is asurprise. It is understandable why people that have invested in years of 360 gamesare upset at the decision. I think one of the larger issues that you don’t address is digital rights management – what about the games I’ve purchased the digital rights to on my 360? Part of the idea behind this was the “roaming 360,” which seems like it will be totally lost between platforms if Microsoft pursues the current course. I would feel really silly (not to mentioned peeved) shelling out $60 for a game I’ve already purchased the rights to for 360 and played successfully for a while. Does Microsoft really expect me to buy Skyrim, Dragon Born, and Dawnguard twice? Not to mention other DLC, season passes, etc.

If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.

“In designing for compatibility, there are two choices that we can take from a performance perspective,” Microsoft’s Andrew Goossen, Technical Fellow, Graphics tells us. “One of which is to design hardware to emulate the performance capabilities of the original as much as possible, or the other one is to say, we’re just going to turn on all the performance and we’re going to deal with all the issues.”

“Certainly no-one has said no, and you can understand why. I mean why wouldn’t you. The choice of which games we pick are based on how popular the game is, what ratings it’s got and what the fans vote for,” explained Moulster.

The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.

It’s a little toned down from the electric excess of the original PS2 entries, but SSX still delights with open-slope thrills and online-connected events. Unless Ubisoft’s Steep ends up being the modern mountain messiah of our shredding dreams, SSX will probably be your best option for some time to come.

It’s been more than six years since the last great 3D skateboarding game – we know this well because that’s when Skate 3 came out. And maybe if EA sees some long-tail sales here, we’ll finally get another one! Download Skate 3 from Xbox Live

Good quality texture filtering will make a big difference to a large number of Xbox One titles, where typically 4x anisotropic tends to be the balancing point chosen by developers. The leap to 16x, enforced at a system level by the back-compat engine, is a huge boon, especially in concert with the complete lack of screen-tear and smoother overall performance. More good news: this new feature extends to Xbox 360 games too.

Embedded video The Mirror’s Edge reboot may have turned into a bit of a damp squib, but that doesn’t dimish the awesomeness of the original game. Don’t see your favorite game here? Back in November, Microsoft said it is holding discussions with all major publishers and developers to possibly bring their games to the program. However, the decision about whether or not a game is added to the lineup ultimately comes down to individual publishers. Xbox 360 games photo

It’s a considerable technical achievement because, while the new console is built from the ground up to run all content, certain design decisions were made during the machine’s gestation period that make this task a whole lot harder than it might have been. Put simply – there’s an easier way, exemplified by PlayStation 4 Pro’s technical make-up, and then there’s the more challenging approach – the Scorpio way.

Kinect and accessories designed for Xbox 360, and games requiring those accessories, are not compatible with Xbox One consoles. This means racing wheels, fight sticks, and other accessories won’t work with the Xbox 360 game on the Xbox One console. Note Xbox 360 games that use the Xbox 360 Kinect will not work with the Xbox One Kinect.

Merging a doomed art deco utopia with objectivist politics, detailed environmental storytelling and a truly dizzying plot twist, Bioshock is one of the most interesting and influential action adventure games ever devised. To harvest or not to harvest: that was the question.

Jonathan Blow’s strange, thoughtful time-travelling platformer, which is really a sort of comment on the whole idea of game mechanics, is a compelling challenge in its own right. But released digitally on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008, the game heralded the indie revolution, in which small teams and lone coders would be able to create idiosyncratic titles and present them to a vast global audience.

JackAzz December 1, 2013, 12:26 am This is a good article, it is informative and objective.Might eventually pickup an Xbox One for multiplayer gaming and Kinect experience, you really can’t beat it! As of now planning to move to PC for most of mygaming. A Hyper-V solution is possible to allow platform compatibility for 360games on the Xbox One. As long as everyone is rushing out to buy the newXbox One console, there is little incentive for Microsoft to offer up backwardscompatibility.

Alan Wake Embedded video Before Remedy pushed storytelling boundaries with Quantum Break on Xbox One, it did much the same with the gripping Alan Wake. Playing as a novelist who finds himself trapped in a storyline of his own creation, the game blends intense psychological horror with frantic action as you use light to battle back shadowy forces. It’s easily one of the most atmospheric games on the Xbox 360 – and maybe if more people play it, we’ll finally get that long-awaited sequel. Not all of your old library of games are playable, but there are well over 350 titles currently available. Xbox is also adding to this list regularly as new titles are checked and cleared for release.

What Goossen described as the ’emulation’ approach is seen in PS4 Pro’s design. Sony’s latest console uses a ‘butterfly’ approach to GPU design, effectively mirroring the base unit’s GPU with an extra rank of 18 compute units, doubling power (more so once extra frequency is added). With this approach, Sony can ensure complete compatibility simply by turning off the additional, new ‘half’ of the graphics core. It’s an elegant solution, but what’s clear is that the newly introduced boost mode doesn’t deliver the Pro’s full power to existing base PS4 titles.

“We bring to bear all 40 compute units and the full 1172MHz clock-speed , we’re bringing those to bear on all the games possible,” says Andrew Goossen. “Now, I have a caveat a bit later about all the compatibility testing we do for these and some of the implications, but we can bring all the 40CUs, all 1172MHz, of course the full 2.3GHz on the CPU.”

Launched in 2005, the Xbox 360, which has recently been discontinued by Microsoft, will be remembered as a classic games machine. Powerful and well-supported by publishers, the console was also perfectly set up for the coming era of online multiplayer gaming – via the robust XBox Live infrastructure.

The popular PGR franchise zooms onto the Xbox 360, expanding many of the Project Gotham Racing features gamers have grown to love. Racers define and create individually customised gameplay, and can race each other–on or offline.

Several times during our day at the Microsoft campus, the same point came up. The team is aiming to deliver, as Mike Ybarra phrases it, “the world’s most powerful console, delivering the best versions of the games”. It’s a statement presumably intended to cover the latest and the greatest multi-platform titles, but if that sentiment applies to the existing Xbox game library too, all the way back to Xbox 360, then that’s absolutely fine with us.

Resolution is an important, defining aspect of image quality but it is not the only one. Texture filtering is hugely important – and it’s actually an element where both PS4 and Xbox One have let us down a little compared to the same titles running on PC, where the full force of 16x anisotropic filtering can make a big difference.

mothergoose85 November 20, 2013, 2:41 pm I do know what you mean – I was talking to my colleagues about this at lunch as we were discussing which console we’d go for. I’m going to wait for the comparison reviews first and see what comes of it.Due to the lack of backwards compatibility I am not tied to a particular ecosystem any more so I might very well switch to the PS4 if it is better (I’d prefer to stay with xbox but it depends on what your friends do as well doesn’t it).

The Xbox One is fundamentally different to the Xbox 360. It uses a x86-64 processor architecture processor, just like most current PCs and laptops, as opposed to the Xbox 360’s PowerPC (PPC) chip. Why did Microsoft choose to shift to this architecture? The reasons are simple – it wanted to keep costs low and make game developers’ lives easier.

It’s arguable that the PowerPC architecture is better than the x86 one – it’s newer for a start, PPC was created by Motorola, IBM and Apple to compete with Intel in the 90s. However since then the PPC architecture has lost favour, primarily because it was a lot cheaper to manufacture x86 processors. This is down to scale – practically every PC and laptop uses one. There’s more to it though. AMD and Intel aggressively invested in the technology and advanced x86 at a faster rate than the PPC backers could cope with. In the end even Apple dumped PPC in 2006 and switched to Intel x86 processors for their iMac and Macbook ranges.
